Prologue: Women’s History Month 2010: Words By Women

Today, Monday 1 March 2010, begins the month-long recognition of women known as Women’s History Month. The theme of this Thirtieth anniversary is “Writing Woman Back Into History”. In celebration of this annual event, I have taken the first part of the theme and I am pleased to present women writers from my personal library. As I went through my collection, I chose the women writers with whose work I have some form of connection, whether slight or strong. The basic format will consist of an introduction, then an excerpt from the woman’s work I own, and finally source information.

Many of the authors are no longer physically living (their works live on), but a good number of them are still alive. Although fiction is the type of writing for the majority of the authors, there are a few instances of various non-fiction writing. Most of the women wrote in the Twentieth century.

From these words by women, readers may discover women writers previously unknown to them, rediscover women they may have forgotten, and find inspiration to delve into specific writers and their works. While reading these posts, I do hope most of the words will resonate on many levels for you. And along the way you may learn some things about me, but more importantly, insight into different writing women.

Commentary is welcome. Which authors here do you like? Don’t like? Why? Who are your favorite authors? Which pieces of writing inspire or influence you? Enjoy the words! Celebrate Women’s History Month!

Today's Writer - Joy Adamson
