Monday Morning Museum: Francesco Lazzaro Guardi

Francesco Lazzaro Guardi – Sunday 5 October 1712 Venice, Italy to Tuesday 1 January 1793 Venice, Italy

Italian Rococo Era Painter

Although I have never been to Venice, Italy, I would love to experience a present day version of Guardi’s painting – Nighttime Procession in Piazza San Marco, 1758 – and perhaps photograph my version of a night in St. Mark’s Square.

Monday Morning Museum: Lucas Cranach The Elder

Lucas Cranach the Elder – Sunday 4 October 1472 Kronach, Germany to Monday 16 October 1553 Weimar, Germany

German Northern Renaissance Painter

I offer this Lucas Cranach the Elder portrait – Amorous Old Woman and Young Man, 1520-1522 – as proof that the older woman/younger man relationship is not a hot, new twenty-first century trend - it’s 500 hundred years old (at least)!

Monday Morning Museum: John Frederick Kensett

John Frederick Kensett – Friday 22 March 1816 Cheshire, Connecticut to Saturday 14 December 1872 New York, New York

American Hudson River School Painter

I like this landscape by Kensett – Wooded Interior, date unknown – because it reminds me of hiking in the woods back in New England. And who knows, since Kensett painted in New England as well as New York, the painting may be of a place in which I’ve wandered.

Last Monday’s Artist – George Wesley Bellows

Monday Morning Museum: George Wesley Bellows

George Wesley Bellows – Saturday 12 or 19 August 1882 Columbus, Ohio to Thursday 8 January 1925 New York, New York

American Ashcan School Painter

Although Bellows is primarily known for his depiction of life in New York City, I have chosen to present brighter images, both in subject matter and color palette such as – Paradise Point, 1919 – which, to me, evokes the light of summer.
