Monday Morning Museum: Johannes Vermeer

Johannes Vermeer – Wednesday 31 October 1632 Delft, Netherlands to Wednesday 15 December 1675 Delft, Netherlands

Dutch Baroque Era Painter

Since Vermeer mainly painted intimate interiors, I like this expansive exterior – View of Delft, circa 1660-1661 – exception to the usual subject matter of his works.

Monday Morning Museum: Joseph Mallord William Turner

Joseph Mallord William Turner – Sunday 23 April 1775 London, England to Friday 19 December 1851 London, England

English Romantic Painter

This image by Turner – Old London Bridge, circa 1796-1797 – reminds me of the nursery rhyme whose first verse is “London Bridge is falling down, falling down, falling down. London Bridge is falling down, My fair lady.”

Monday Morning Museum: Léon Joseph Florentin Bonnat

Léon Joseph Florentin Bonnat – Thursday 20 June 1833 Bayonne, France to Friday 8 September 1922 Monchy-Saint-Éloi, France

French Academic Painter

My experience in the Sistine Chapel was somewhat different than the one being depicted in this Bonnat painting - Intérieur de la Chapelle Sixtine, circa 1877-1879 – I was certainly not alone with my thoughts and admiration.

Monday Morning Museum: Katsushika Hokusai

Katsushika Hokusai – October/November 1760 Edo, Japan to Thursday 10 May 1849 Edo, Japan

Japanese Ukiyo-e Printmaker

All of Katsushika Hokusai images in this post are from his series “Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji”.

When I first saw this print – Fuji Seen Through the Mannen Bridge at Fukagawa, circa 1830 – the bridge seemed familiar to me, though I have never been to Japan. Then I realized that the Mannen Bridge could be the inspirational source for Claude Monet’s Japanese bridge at Giverny (which I have seen in person). I love the connection from one artist and culture to another!

Monday Morning Museum: Charles Nègre

Charles Nègre – 1820 Grasse, France to 1880 Grasse, France

French Photographer

The primary reason that I like this photograph – Arles. Saint-Trophime, 1852 – is the composition of the print and how it draws me into the picture.
