Monday Morning Museum: Berthe Morisot

Berthe Morisot – Thursday 14 January 1841 Bourges, France to Saturday 2 March 1895 Paris, France

French Impressionist Painter

Although the view I have seen from Trocadero includes the Eiffel Tower, Morisot’s - View of Paris From the Trocadero Heights, 1872 – is a nice reminder of the area pre-Eiffel.

Monday Morning Museum: Charles Rettew Sheeler, Jr.

Charles Rettew Sheeler, Jr. – Monday 16 July 1883 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Friday 7 May 1965 Dobbs Ferry, New York

American Precisionist Painter and Photographer

I chose to feature this Sheeler work – Winter Window, 1941 – simply because I like the uncomplicated and uncluttered image with its straight lines and single object delineations of the foreground and middle ground. However, I do think that the top 25% of the painting does not add anything to the image and perhaps detracts from it.

Monday Morning Museum: Édouard Manet

Édouard Manet – Monday 23 January 1832 Paris, France to Monday 30 April 1883 Paris, France

French Realist / Impressionist Painter

Here is Manet’s view of an often portrayed Italian site – The Grand Canal, Venice, 1869 – a more focused and singular depiction than is usually rendered by artists.

Monday Morning Museum: Anthony Van Dyck

Anthony van Dyck – Thursday 22 March 1599 Antwerp, Belgium to Thursday 9 December 1641 London, England

Flemish Baroque Era Painter

Although I prefer the city with the name of this painting – Paris, 1632 – I can appreciate the depiction of a major character in Greek Mythology.

Monday Morning Museum: William Lamb Picknell

William Lamb Picknell – Sunday 23 October 1853 Hinesburg, Vermont to Sunday 8 August 1897 Marblehead, Massachusetts

American Landscape Painter

Not sure if I like this painting by Picknell – Solitude, 1888 – more for the actual image or for the title, which reflects my state of being.
