Monday Morning Museum: Winslow Homer

Winslow Homer – Wednesday 24 February 1836 Boston, Massachusetts to Thursday 29 September 1910 Prout’s Neck, Maine

American Maritime Art Painter

Though the location of Homer’s – An October Day, 1889 – is unknown, I venture it is a New England setting.

Monday Morning Museum: Hubert Robert

Hubert Robert – Tuesday 22 May 1733 Paris, France to Friday 15 April 1808 Paris, France

French Rococo Era Painter

On a few guided walks I have taken in Paris, the guides have mentioned that houses once stood on some of the bridges – The Demolition of Houses On The Notre Dame Bridge, 1786 – is evidence that such statements were true.

Monday Morning Museum: Berthe Morisot

Berthe Morisot – Thursday 14 January 1841 Bourges, France to Saturday 2 March 1895 Paris, France

French Impressionist Painter

Although the view I have seen from Trocadero includes the Eiffel Tower, Morisot’s - View of Paris From the Trocadero Heights, 1872 – is a nice reminder of the area pre-Eiffel.

Monday Morning Museum: Charles Rettew Sheeler, Jr.

Charles Rettew Sheeler, Jr. – Monday 16 July 1883 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Friday 7 May 1965 Dobbs Ferry, New York

American Precisionist Painter and Photographer

I chose to feature this Sheeler work – Winter Window, 1941 – simply because I like the uncomplicated and uncluttered image with its straight lines and single object delineations of the foreground and middle ground. However, I do think that the top 25% of the painting does not add anything to the image and perhaps detracts from it.
