Monday Morning Museum: John Singer Sargent

John Singer Sargent – Saturday 12 January 1856 Florence, Italy to Tuesday 14 April 1925 London, England

American Portrait Painter

I have always admired this painting – Portrait of Isabella Stewart Gardner, 1888 – ever since the first time I saw it at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum during my freshman year of college. I like its simplicity and the recurring motif of the neckline’s shape in the pearls around Isabella’s waist and the clasping of her hands. The Italian-inspired museum is absolutely wonderful and visually stunning from the central courtyard to the variety of artwork on all three floors.

Last Monday’s Artist – Wassily Wassilyevich Kandinsky

Monday Morning Museum: Wassily Wassilyevich Kandinsky

Wassily Wassilyevich Kandinsky – 16 December 1866 Moscow, Russia to 13 December 1944 Neuilly-sur-Seine, France

Russian-born French Expressionist Painter

Kandinsky presents in this piece – Yellow-Red-Blue, 1925 – a work whose theme is the display of the primary pigment colors utilized in painting. I have used these same colors in the "Monday Morning Museum" logo.

Monday Morning Museum: André Kertész

André Kertész – Monday 2 July 1894 Budapest, Hungary to Saturday 28 September 1985 New York, New York

Hungarian-born American Photographer

It was in the midst of his French period (circa 1925 to 1936), that Kertész shot this photograph - Clock of the Académie Française, Paris, 1932 – looking towards the Pont des Arts and the Palais du Louvre, places I’ve been often and enjoyed.

Monday Morning Museum: Paul Cézanne

Paul Cézanne – Saturday 19 January 1839 Aix-en-Provence, France to Monday 22 October 1906 Aix-en-Provence, France

French Post-Impressionist Painter

In keeping with presenting landscape works by Paul Cézanne, this piece – In The Woods, 1897-1898 – appeals to me because of the cool colors used, giving a refresh sense to the subject matter.
